When the RV Investigator vessel dropped a line with a piece of equipment down into the depths, researchers expected to see a bit of the region’s wildlife. What they didn’t expect, though, was a full on squid battle.
The ship belongs to the CSIRO marine and atmospheric research group. After dropping an instrument down to just shy of 500 feet, a curious squid decided to see just what was going on. “When the equipment is being calibrated,” CSIRO told IFL.com, “it tends to attract some inquisitive, and sometimes aggressive, squid!” The squid was in for a surprise–while its attention was firmly on the equipment, another larger squid spotted an easy victim and moved in for the kill with surprising speed.
