The Inertia

BASE jumping is inherently dangerous. When you’re jumping off things and relying on a complicated piece of fabric to get you safely down to the ground, things go wrong—and often, when they go wrong, they go VERY wrong—but sometimes, luck comes into play. Such was the case on August 16 for an experienced BASE jumper.

Mount Brento, Italy, offers a perfect location for jumpers, but when Karl pulled his chute, he looked up at the canopy and realized something was wrong: tension knots. After a terrifying few seconds, he hits the cliff face hard enough to fracture his leg, leaving him stranded in a place he definitely doesn’t want to be. All ended well, though, considering how badly it could have gone. He was airlifted to safety and lives to jump again.
