The Inertia

If you as spend much time staring at the mysteries of the deep as NOAA researchers do, it means that you’re enamored with all those little creatures swimming around doing their business. That sentiment is clear as day on the audio of a video shot in the Kinlan Canyon for the Deep Connections 2019 expedition.

The purpose of the expedition was wide-ranging. It “sought to further explore the distribution of this and other corals within the canyon, as well of that of sponges and other benthic organisms.

Although they documented a whole lot of really interesting stuff, the high point came when they spotted a little red crab who was excitedly snacking on a piece of squid. It had a little competition, though, and it came in the form of two aptly-named cutthroat eels. “These cutthroat eels are pretty hardcore when it comes to feeding,” says one scientist. In response, another dropped a pretty fantastic dad joke. “Would you say they’re pretty… cutthroat, Megan?”
