A few years ago, a video went viral. It showed a young giant squid wrapping its tentacles around a stand-up paddler’s board while another person with a camera squealed in some kind of delight. It was pretty cool, if you didn’t think about the fact that there was something obviously very wrong with the squid. But in a longer version of the video, the viewer can see the end of the poor creature’s life.
It’s likely that the squid in the video is a juvenile male that was attacked by another creature. Squids don’t often come to the surface because… well, because they’re squids. This one, however, was floating along, very clearly in a bad way. The people who found it only sped up its death by taking it to the beach.
