Scramble? More like Scrapyard.
The Red Bull Hare Scramble is part of a four-day party/enduro races called the Erzbergrodeo. At this rodeo of sorts, there is also the Iron Road Prologue, a Freestyle Motocross jam, a hillclimb, and the traditional ride into the town of Eisenerz, but the Hare Scramble is the big show with only the fastest 500 riders of the Iron Road Prologue qualifying for it.
They call the Hare Scramble one of the toughest dirt bike races in the world for nothing… and from the looks of things, this year was no different from the rest. With the 50 photos above and three videos below, I offer up 53 reasons in total why.
As the Ezbergrodeo website so dramatically states: “1 mountain. 500 riders. 15 checkpoints. 4 hours of time. And only a handful of riders crosses the finish line!”
After watching the highlights, I was convinced. But let me put this out there: the crashes might be even more convincing.
The grand prize? Forget money; it is a piece of rock, a piece of rock shaped from a hunk of the Iron Mountain — a mountain more affectionately referred to as the Iron Giant — itself. That right there is a MAN’S PRIZE. And this right here is a MAN’S RACE.
