“Depending on what competition you choose, you can win or loose; and that is about as interesting competitive sports get. I really haven’t got any interest. But pulling off a trick that’s not been done, that’s a new thing, that’s opening up a new exploration, a new idea, or a new mode. That’s different to me. That’s creative.” – Johnny Dawes
What do you do when you’re a 50-year-old climber, have pushed the boundaries of climbing for over 20 years, and find yourself longing for a new challenge? Apparently — at least if you’re to believe legend Johnny Dawes — you take away the most intuitive part of climbing: the hands.
For Johnny, it is simple. He understands that no-handed climbing is pointless. But to him (as to many), so is climbing. Another upside? On cold days he is able to wear gloves. We suppose that makes it worth it…?
Anyway, whatever we think of the motivating, it is impressive all the same. Taking to Stanage Edge in England, he looks like a damn Alpine ibex.
