If this isn’t the most terrifying footage you’ve seen this week, you’ve had one hell of a terrifying week. The mountains are great fun, aren’t they? But with that great fun comes a varying amount of danger. Avalanches, of course, are high on the list when exploring areas that are a little more off the beaten path, and tree wells pose a serious danger to just about anyone.

Getting caught in an avalanche or falling head first into a tree well are certainly both frightening things to contemplate. Falling into a seemingly endless crevasse, though? That’s the stuff nightmares are made of. And that’s exactly what happened to the skier in the video above. Don’t fret, though — the guy got out just fine.

“Fortunately,” wrote the Instagram page @lespowtos, “we were all well equipped (ava/probe/shovel/harness/ice axe/crampons/ice screws/rope) and our friend was able to start going out alone until we came to secure him and help him get out completely.”

In a subsequent video posted in a Facebook comment section, the almost-victim can be seen getting a helping hand back onto solid ground, and you can bet he breathed one hell of a sigh of relief.
