The Inertia

As we turn the corner of fall into mid-October, many of us begin to sift through closets and dig up skis and snowboards that have been patiently waiting for the return of snow. For those of us who head out into the backcountry, it’s also time to dig out the snow shovels, make sure our avalanche beacons are charged, and knock the rust off of our safety habits after the long months of heat.

While checking safety gear is often as simple as turning things on and off again, remembering safety habits isn’t. However, watching videos or refreshing your knowledge with an online course can make things easier. Mammut’s Aspects Series seeks to shed light on unique avalanche rescue situations, so that we all can learn from them. In the video above, they tell the story of ice climbers Michelle Kadatz, Tim Banfield, and Maia Schumacher, and one of the deepest companion rescues on record.

Editor’s Note: Interested in safely riding untracked powder in the backcountry? There’s a lot to learn. In his introductory course, Nick Russell’s Guide to Backcountry Basicsbig mountain snowboarder Nick Russell shares a lifetime of knowledge and information essential to begin your journey in the backcountry. Find it here.
