Back in mid-August, I got the chance to shadow legendary Florida skin diver G.R. Tarr while he competed in the largest spearfishing tournament in the world, The St. Pete Open. Hosted in Saint Petersburg, Florida, the event has been taking place for over 40 years. With over 400 divers, the tournament allows you to go anywhere you want — meaning no boundaries. As G.R. told me, once you leave the captain’s meeting the night before the event, you can get in a jet airplane and go to Tahiti if you want to… you just have to be back to the weigh-in by 7 p.m. the next day.
From the hungry bull sharks to the massive Goliath grouper and brutal seas, we had a full 24 hours of non-stop action. I won’t reveal too much more, as the video will speak for itself, so take a few minutes of your day and get amped to go diving!
