The Inertia

Law enforcement officials routinely spend their time training. Part of that training for the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office is ocean-related. But over the weekend, their training plans changed for a big reason: a 15-foot great white was cruising around.

“The sheriff’s helicopter ‘Henry-1′ was patrolling coast and thought about doing some water training in Bodega Bay,” Sonoma Sheriff wrote on Facebook. “NOPE! The crew looked down and saw this beauty at the mouth of the Estero Americano in shallow water.”

According to the post, officials had been training in that exact area just the day before. “The crew was quiet knowing they had been in that same water yesterday,” they continued. “The White Shark was estimated to be about 13-15’ long.”

While Bodega and Tomales Bays are known hot spots for shark activity, the video the Sheriff’s Office captured is pretty stunning—just a peaceful, enormous creature going about its day-to-day business. And while it might not be the smartest thing to hop in near a shark like this, it’s wonderful to think about them swimming around out there.
