The Inertia

Whether your passions find you predominantly in the mountains or in the ocean – or maybe equal amounts of time in both – there’s a bit of a juxtaposition embedded in the love and enjoyment of Earth’s wild places. Having a personal connection to the outdoors often compels us to want to protect these spaces, and yet to enjoy them in the first place we must fly, drive, have the necessary equipment, etc. All of which contribute to climate change.

So, how do we square that circle? Absorbing that reality seems like a good place to start. Changing behavior to lessen your personal impact and raising awareness are solid next steps, too.

In the flick above, a gaggle of European snowboarders and skiers (with a brief cameo from Jeremy Jones!) spend two months navigating the Alps by foot and by train, challenging themselves to execute a trip with minimal carbon footprint. And while the riding is top-notch, and the history surrounding the countless huts in the Alps is wild, the table conversations about climate change remind us of the need to find solutions and modify our behavior to lessen our collective impact.
