Boat flips at Santa Cruz Harbor

The Inertia

March 27 in Santa Cruz was a blustery day to be at sea. Blustery enough for a small craft advisory to be issued, but as is generally the case, such advisories often go un-heeded.

The pilot of the vessel in the video you see here was, apparently, a bit hesitant about leaving the inlet while he was in the Santa Cruz harbor. In the aftermath of the accident, it’s likely he’s extraordinarily remorseful that he didn’t listen to his gut.

“Once the boat passed the break and stayed maybe 600 feet from the mouth for about 10 minutes,” wrote The Qualified Captain on Instagram, “(the boat’s operator) attempted to come back in during a big set of waves.”

As you can see, it didn’t go as he’d hoped. In an incredibly sad turn of events, while the pilot was able to swim to shore, he had a dog aboard that didn’t make it back.

The saying “if you don’t know, don’t go” is especially pertinent here.
