The Inertia

Sammy Carlson has always gone as big as any of his peers in the freeskiing world, but this is definitely another level. Sammy and the crew at Teton Gravity Research traveled to Michigan in 2014 during filming of the Sammy C Project where they found this abandoned ski jump known as Copper Peak on the Upper Peninsula along Lake Superior.

The crew is claiming a World Record as “the first skier to hit a ‘ski-flying’ long jump with freestyle intent.” That seems like a tough record to confirm as the old-school ski-jumpers could get fairly tricky on their freeheel skis. But the whole stunt is pretty radical, nonetheless, and Carlson makes it look incredible, pulling a stylish Switch 5 off a jump that, at one time, regularly sent skiers 500 feet. That’s right, dude hit it switch at mach speed. He even makes his wipeout look rad. “When we showed up it was a ghost ramp. It hadn’t been hit in twenty years,” Carlson said. “The people helping me from the community were just as committed as I was. It was true team effort.”
