The Inertia

There, in the Grand Canyon, rowing a dory is one of the most prized jobs in the world. 20 years of manning the baggage boat is a typical downpayment on that coveted seat in the old-school wooden boats.

For Amber Shannon, it has been a longtime dream. And with big brother having “achieved all [of parents’] life goals” by becoming a doctor, Amber was free to field her dream, a dream she articulated to her mother and father in a letter written on the very same river years ago. Nine years later, she is still paying her dues.

What makes the dory so special? It is an craft that feels the entire force of the ocean, swinging and swaying with the current.

Needless to say, from starry-eyed kids to Amber to the grey backs who lead the way, the boatmen of the Grand Canyon are a crew of happy campers.

Take vet John Shocklee. He knows how great it is.

And as for Amber choosing boatman over doctor? “It’s definitely easier to get a PhD that a dory in the Grand Canyon,” Shocklee says.

But not nearly as much fun.
