Meet Heidi. She’s an octopus that has taken the internet by storm in the last week. She’s a real dreamer, as they say, but Heidi dreams a little differently than you do—she changes colors when she does. The mesmerizing footage was captured for PBS Nature’s upcoming episode, Octopus: Making Contact and narrated by David Scheel, a professor of marine biology at Alaska Pacific University.
While it’s not definitively proven that Heidi is indeed dreaming, it seems fairly obvious that that’s the case.
“So here she’s asleep, she sees a crab, and her color starts to change a little bit,” Scheel theorized before Heidi’s color changes dramatically from pale white to dark violet and into a camouflage pattern. “This is a camouflage,” Scheel continued, “like she’s just subdued a crab and now she’s going to sit there and eat it and she doesn’t want anyone to notice her.”
Whatever the case may be, one thing is for sure: the footage is absolutely stunning.
