Mother Nature can be a cruel thing to witness. It’s part and parcel of how life works, though: things eat each other. We eat animals. Animals eat animals. But watching a cute animal like a baby dolphin get killed by an orca is heart wrenching, to say the least. It is, however, the reality of life on this planet. And Mark Healey, a man acutely aware of the fact that the meat we eat came from an animal that was once living and breathing, recently got a first-hand look at that reality.
That first-hand look happened on a recent trip to Baja. He, along with the Melin crew, were out for a day of fishing when they saw something rarely seen. “Orcas hunting and killing dolphins!” he wrote on Instagram. “We must have watched them kill at least three and we left with them pursuing more.”
According to Healey, the killer whales were likely teaching their young how to hunt. “It was amazing to watch their strategies and very sobering,” he continued. “The fact that they can take such agile and intelligent prey at will via team work and strategy was an eye opener. In summary, death by orca would not be a preferred way for me to leave this earth…”
