2015 was quite the sharky year. From Mick Fanning’s encounter to the string of shark attacks around Australia, Reunion Island, and Florida (among many other places), surfers everywhere have been on high alert, suspicious at even the faintest hint of a dark shadow in the lineup. After having a relatively long run of feeds absent of shark news, this week saw somewhat of a resurgence after a few CT surfers got chased out of the water at Margaret River last night and Jeremy Flores released a profound piece about shark attacks in his hometown of Reunion Island.
Given Australia’s track record, it may not surprise you that the following incident occurred down under.
“So this just happened,” wrote the woman on the jet ski. “We were on our Yamaha FX Cruiser jet ski touring up the western side of Fraser Island, we noticed a shadow in the water and realised it was a rather large shark. We decided to get a little closer to take some video footage and we clearly got a little too close! No one was injured although the jet ski did get some scuff marks where the shark contacted the ski. I literally had to move my leg so it didn’t get mauled!”
As good as it is to see no one hurt, it probably wasn’t such a good idea this couple intentionally accelerated toward the shark. The creature appeared to have been threatened by the incoming jet ski, which likely prompted it to lunge at the them. In the end, it all made for some pretty intense footage.
