The Inertia

I love surfing. I also love riding motorcycles. But at no point in the years that I’ve enjoyed either activity did it once cross my mind to put the two together. When I see Brad Domke doing crazy things on a skim board that I’ll never attempt on a surfboard, unlike most of the surf world I don’t get mad at the guy and call him a kook. I love what he’s doing, even if you don’t consider it surfing. I also don’t lose my cool whenever Laird does something Lairdish (or should we call it “Lairdy?”) – another grumpy habit of the majority of surfers. For whatever reason Laird’s antics have always reminded me of one of those really smart kids that constantly gets into trouble tinkering with things because he’s just so bored. So Hamilton’s stunts amuse me. Robbie Maddison though? This dude did not abide. I’m also in the same school of thought that technically  Maddison was more or less on a modified jet ski with a race suit on (by the way, why did he need the helmet exactly?) than he was actually surfing. Nonetheless it was a gimmicky explosion of #WTF’s at a time when Tahiti was already popping up on our daily feeds as it got pummeled by waves. Really good waves. And one of those waves went to a dude on a dirt bike. Just not really pumped on that whole idea altogether.

Anyway, we’ve seen the Pipe Dream video once or twice with the stunt expertly pulled off, but Sony’s now released the full action cam/first person perspective from behind the scenes. As expected the whole deal didn’t go off without a few hiccups, and it is kind of cool to see a speedometer on a wave for the first time. I’ll admit that.
