You might remember the name Haulover Inlet from a recent viral video in which a boat full of teens were caught dumping trash over the side very close by. Haulover is a bit of a rough go, even for the most experienced boaters, and Wavy Boats, the YouTube channel that captured those teenaged litter bugs, has 15 minutes of proof.
Haulover is a man-made inlet that gets really, really choppy. Notoriously so, in fact. So notoriously that many websites recommend inexperienced boaters avoid it all together. With shifting sandbars, strong tidal currents, a narrow channel, and all sorts of other factors coming into play, it’s the site of many a boating mishap.
Add that to the fact that Haulover is close to the Boca Bash, an annual party in Boca Raton, Florida, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster, especially when the party comes to town. Built in 1925, the inlet connects Biscayne Bay with the Atlantic Ocean. Its purpose is to allow boaters easy access to the ocean, but sometimes it’s not exactly “easy.”
In recent years, Haulover has become a bit of a destination. Social media is flooded with clips of boats navigating the waves — or trying to, at least — and while they can be amusing, it’s worth noting that it’s actually pretty dangerous. Falling out of a boat in a heavily trafficked area like Haulover poses significant risks, and I’d be willing to bet that sometimes, the boaters aren’t the most sober people in the world.
So with that in mind, here are 15 minutes of folks trying to make their way through Haulover Inlet, with varying degrees of success.
