great white shark in Malibu

The Inertia

If you surf in Southern California, it’s very likely that you’ve been within spitting distance of a great white shark. They get a bad rap — an understandable rap, though, given the damage they can do to a human being — despite the fact that it’s been proven time and time again that we’re not on a great white’s preferred menu.

Sharks are in the ocean, and that’s a fact. You know what else is in the ocean? The wave at Malibu. Recently, Carlos Gauna, a guy who films a LOT of sharks, took a little trip down the coast to Malibu in hopes of filming a few more.

“It’s not always successful, but this time, I captured something I see often but rarely get a chance to film because of its unpredictability,” he wrote. “A great white shark breaches into the sky just a few-hundred yards from the highway!”

He also received an image of a great white shark off the world-famous Malibu pier, so he decided to go and have a look for it. Now, one could understand why seeing a shark breaching very near to one of the most famously crowded waves in the world would be unnerving, but it might help to remember that sharks are pretty good at being stealthy. If it weren’t for footage like Gauna’s, it’s likely we’d never even know that we were close to sharks at all.
