The Inertia

The Ford Bronco is an iconic vehicle. Everyone knows it, and it’s not just because of that white one involved in the slow-motion chase. It was an icon long before that, and now Ford is releasing a new version. And judging by the public reception, it definitely still holds icon status.

To help promote the new Bronco, Ford enlisted legendary climber, photographer, and Academy Award-winning director Jimmy Chin. After the 2021 Ford Bronco was unveiled to the world on July 13, the surge in traffic to Ford’s website was so big that it crashed. When it came back online, there were so many preorders that now the Bronco has an 18-month wait list. That means, despite the fact that the 2021 Bronco comes out next spring, those preorders might mean that actually getting behind the wheel won’t happen until 2022.

The new Bronco does look pretty incredible, especially if you’re a fan of the old ones. An issue that a lot of carmakers deal with is how to keep the spirit of the classic car alive while wrapping it up in modern tweaks. It’s a venture that can fall flat on its face, and often does. But not in this case. Not at all.

The story Ford partnered with Disney and Jimmy Chin to create tells the story of how Chin came to be in the place where he is today. And of course, it’s was a hard road, but one that he loved to walk. “I’ve always found that the harder a place is to get to, the more I enjoyed going there,” he says. “Because there’s a process to it. Some of the most interesting challenges come from just trying to get there.”
