The Inertia

A video posted to the Pinellas County sheriff’s office’s social media pages shows two deputies chasing down a runaway boat, before one dramatically leaps aboard to get the vessel under control.

“On July 30th, Deputy Fernandes and Deputy Constant with the Marine and Environmental Lands Unit responded to a call to assist the United States Coast Guard with a runaway vessel,” reads the caption on the original video. “The driver had fallen off and was rescued by a Good Samaritan. The Coast Guard attempted to deploy prop fowling [sic] devices to stop the vessel but they were unsuccessful.”

The deputies caught up to the boat, traveling at around 41 mph. Then, much like Lori Singer in Footloose, one deputy jumped from one boat to the other before shutting the errant watercraft off.

The sheriff’s office had a PSA for those who want to avoid a similar fate for their own boats: “If you don’t want this to happen to you… always connect your kill switch lanyard.”
