The Inertia

There is some seriously weird stuff in the ocean. Need proof? Well, look at the video above. Need more? Well, look at this Russian guy’s Instagram.

Since you’re here, though, here’s the story. According to Jarkata Global, the massive carcass was discovered by 37-year-old Asrul Tuanakota. It washed up on Tuesday evening on Huamal Beach in the West Seram District, Maluku, and it’s got everyone very, very confused.

Initially, local fishermen said they thought it might be a giant squid, but a spokesperson for Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries says it’s more likely some kind of whale. “If we look in terms of physical almost the same as the whales,” said Nasrul Latulanit of the KKP’s Office of Marine and Coastal Resources Management. “If the nature of squid is biggest only up to 5 metres, if the whale can be 20 to 30 metres.”

Here’s another angle:

According to reports, the strange creature was dead for at least three days before it floated onto the beach. Still bleeding, the water around it turned red, and tourists flocked to the area to wander around in the gross water.

Marine biologists in the area are champing at the bit to have a look at it, and they’re going to have a chance very soon. With any luck, it’ll be something we’ve never seen before… but don’t hold your breath. Early reports suggest that it’s most likely a baleen whale, a fin whale, a blue whale, or a bride’s whale. “There is lots of stuff in the ocean that we don’t know about, whale biologst Alexander Werth told Live Science, “but there’s nothing that big that remains unknown.”
