Breaching Whale lands on fishing boat

The Inertia

Fishing is a great way to spend the day. If you’re lucky, you’re eating a pile of freshly caught fish around a table with a bunch of good friends after spending the day on a boat with a bunch of good friends. If you’re unlucky, you spent the day on a boat with a bunch of good friends. Either way, you’re probably pretty happy when you go to bed at night. But sometimes, a breaching whale lands on your boat.

That very, very rare occurrence is exactly what happened in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

“There have been a lot of whales up in Portsmouth, NH and even a couple inside the Piscataqua River mouth,” wrote The Qualified Captain on Instagram. In case you were wondering,  The Qualified Captain is an apparel brand. “Watch out for the big pogie schools. Whales can’t see through them, and it can lead to this.”

Whales, as you know, like to eat fish. They’ll come up from below, mouths agape in hopes of filling their bellies with a school of them. So it stands to reason that the whale here was simply hoping for a meal that just so happened to be beneath a fishing boat.

Luckily, everyone aboard was okay, and it’s probable that the whale was just fine, too — if not a little embarrassed.
