The Inertia

Nothing like that cool mountain breeze blowing right up between those butt cheeks to remind you that you’re free-soloing umpteen feet up a face with literally nothing on your body. Nope, absolutely nothing like it.

At least we don’t think so. David Fusté, however, knows so.

“I always put myself in the place of animals,” Fusté explains of his balls-out free-soloing ways. “Unlike us, climbing is not a hobby for them… but a way of life — and I always imagined myself as an animal who had to climb a wall in search of food or a nest, trying to get closer to that animal behavior, feeling like an animal while doing a human activity such as climbing.”

Hence the breezy cheeks.

Anyway, we are impressed with the bare feet for sure, though when I really think about it, I begin to see (and vicariously feel) calluses where they otherwise shouldn’t be, and it makes me rather comfortable with me less “natural” ways.
