But it’s that good sort of nausea, you know? The sort of nausea that starts with a calming awe at nature’s outstretched majesty quickly followed by an abrupt: does-he-know-there-is-nothing-but-a-gazillion-feet-of-free-fall-beneath-him!?!
Apparently, Alex Honnold does: “I suppose the defining thing about free soloing is it is just so much higher consequence than other climbing, because you have no rope, no backup, no protection… as soon as you step off the ground, you’re basically looking at a 3,000 foot drop.”
Don’t get us wrong — our nausea is out of a massive respect for the pioneer. And the opportunity to experience these climbs through edits like this is an amazing thing. But it is in that amazement that these overwhelming emotions are steeped. Anyway, this video is from October, but with all that is happening around free soloing (specifically Honnold), it felt right to share.
