The Inertia

Alex Honnold is one of those athletes that is truly inspirational — inspirational in a comprehensive sense. From his free-soloing to his talking about climbing, he just always seems so happy to be doing whatever it is he is doing. And that outward happiness in that child-like enthusiasm and cheeky smile are, to paraphrase the cliche, indeed contagious.

That uninhibited passion for all pursuits extend to urban settings as well. Take this recent buildering expedition of his to San Francisco in preparation of his first ascent of Taipei 101. In exploring the Bay Area, he climbs Mark di Suvero’s sculptures on Crissy Field, monkeys up the Palace of Fine Arts, and scales the TransAmerica building in Financial District. But while his lines are inspiring, it is the interviews in between that prove to bring out an unparalleled excitement in Alex and viewers alike.

“I spend so much more time on rock where its so natural to me,” Honnold tells Stride Health, “whereas with buildings it’s much more of an adventure — I don’t have that much experience climbing up buildings, so it’s more exciting.”
