It’s not often that you see a deer swimming in the ocean, but that was exactly what happened when
shark researcher Sean Van Sommeran was on the water off Seacliff State Beach in Santa Cruz County, California.
According to Van Sommeran, there was a nine-foot shark on the other side of his boat that was eyeing up the deer, which very likely would have been its first taste of venison.
“My first approach on the deer, it began to panic. It was kicking so hard it was actually sinking and losing its forward momentum,” he told reporters. “So I just kind of backed off. I saw the shark, it was maybe 90 feet away.”
According to the report, the deer had been scared into the water by a dog on the beach, and within a few minutes, Van Sommeran was able to herd the deer back to shore.
