For the last few years, Carlos Gauna has been flying his drone above the ocean searching for great white sharks. He looks for other things, too, but the great white shark is what he’s mainly focussed on. And in those years, he’s amassed quite the collection of amazing footage.
In the video above, Gauna pored over many hours of archives in order to stitch together some of his favorite moments. It’s not just stunning camera work, though — Gauna is a knowledgeable guy when it comes to great whites and he explains what he thinks is likely going on in each clip.
Despite the fact that he knows a hell of a lot about one of Mother Nature’s most interesting creatures, he’s quick to make sure the viewer knows that he’s not formally trained.
“I’m NOT a marine biologist,” he writes. “As with all YouTube content, I encourage independent verification of facts via official scientific and trustworthy sources. I will strive to post citations for any information I discuss here whenever possible. My goal is to use photography and drones to bring awareness to wildlife and the nature around us.”
Some of the moments he captured include a family encountering a great white, a lone swimmer with a great white in close proximity, a great white attacking a bunch of kelp, and a few other semi-frightening scenarios.
