The wait is over. After going on yellow alert Monday, Capitulo Perfeito has been given the green light to run on Sunday, February 18th.
Capitulo Perfeito is an annual one-day, invite-only competition focused solely on tube-riding. Since the opening of the contest window in January, organizers have been watching and waiting for the absolute best day of the Portuguese winter to produce the type of fast, hollow barrels that the competition is known for. Now that the date has been set, 16 surfers from around the world are starting their journeys to Portugal for the 10th edition of the event.
Those journeys will end in Carcavelos. It’s a break that needs just the right combination of swell and wind (hence the three-month contest window), but when it’s on, it’s a barrel machine. “On its day, it rallies with some of the best breaks in the world, like Pipe or Puerto Escondido or Supertubes,” big wave surfer and former champion Nic Von Rupp told us. “It’s insane to really show the world the potential that beach break has.”
In order to take advantage of that potential, the event’s roster is stacked with legendary tube hounds and former Championship Tour pros who received invitations. Alongside them, seven Portuguese surfers and six former event champions will round out the rest of the competition field.
The competition will have a 7:00 am first official call. The competitors in the heat draw will be: Anthony Walsh (AUS), Aritz Aranburu (SP), Balaram Stack (USA), Bruno Santos (BRA), Dylan Graves (PR), Francisca Veselko (PRT), João Maria Mendonça (PRT), Michael February (ZA), Nathan Florence (HAW), Nic von Rupp (PRT), Pedro Boonman (PRT), Rob Machado (USA), Salvador Vala (PRT), Tiago Pires (PRT), Tiago Stock (PRT) and William Aliotti (FRA).
If it’s anything like previous years, we’re in for a spectacle.
