Surf trips are always on our mind. Always. There’s never an inappropriate time to start plotting where you’ll jet off to for your next far away mission of chasing barrels. But the promise of a new year just begs you to kick things off with a new trip to a different location. Because few things are better than starting a whole new year with a completely fresh experience. We’re not sure if that was the inspiration behind Salani Surf Resort’s newest special, but it works just the same because few things are more motivating to get us to take a trip than getting the bro deal on accommodations. And that’s reason number one why Upolu, Samoa should be your first trip of 2016. For trips in January they’re offering a 6th night free to anybody booking a 5 night stay. But in case you need more motivation than that, here are five more gentle twists of the arm.
Ohhhhh the barrels you will find
Samoan surf is known for its thick, spitting barrels everywhere you go. The reefs here are world class thanks in part to the fact that Upolu is smack dab in the middle of the South Pacific, and everybody knows a trip to Samoa means barrels, barrels and more barrels. There isn’t much else to say about the surf here. And who doesn’t want to get barreled?
There’s a refreshing lack of crowds
January falls in Samoa’s “slow” season, but the waves around Salani are swell magnets. It doesn’t take large swell for it to be solid overhead and the winds can be more favorable from January through May. The normal flow of tourists and other traveling surfers will be lighter than heading out there during the northern hemisphere’s summer months. On top of that the locals don’t really have a thick surf population so you’d actually be hard pressed to find a packed lineup this time of year. The same north
It’s only 6 hours from Honolulu
Some of surfing’s most exotic trips require some serious travel time. And the longer it takes to get to your final destination the less time you’re spending chasing waves. Getting to the Samoan Islands is not one of those endeavors though. It’s only a six hour flight from Honolulu, which is child’s play compared to the 20 or so hours you’d spend getting from the mainland to Bali for example.
It’s a tropical paradise
We already know you’re smack dab in the middle of the South Pacific, so you can picture what you’re going to get in terms of clear, warm water and nonstop trunk weather. This is also a place where Polynesian culture is alive and well. You could come here with no desire to surf at all (not that we’d condone that type of behavior) and fill an entire trip with exploring the island, taking in the culture, and never get bored.
Did we mention the barrels?
Does it need to be explained all over again? Seriously, look at the photos. BARRELS!
