Kai Lenny has his fingers in a lot of pies. If it involves wind, waves, and some sort of wave-riding vehicle, Kai Lenny likely has it mastered. Be it windsurfing, big wave surfing, kite surfing, foil surfing, or just plain ol’ surfing, Lenny is a hell of a lot better than the masses at it. That’s for a few reasons: one, he’s a freak of nature. Two, he works his ass off to capitalize on the fact that he’s a freak of nature. And three, he’s a product of his environment. Jaws is in his back yard. Ho’okipa Beach is his playground. Ho’okipa, in particular, is a real blessing for a multi-sport athlete like Kai.
“Of all the places in the world Ho’okipa does produce some exceptional conditions for all sports,” Kai said. “You never know what the sport of choice will be until you pull up to the beach park.”
When he does pull up, he drops a bit of knowledge about Ho’okipa that would be helpful for the non-local to be aware of. If there are more than ten people surfing, don’t bother pulling out the windsurfer. Luckily for Kai, he’s got plenty of options. And on this particular day, he picked plain ol’ surfing.
