The WSL announced Thursday morning there is “strong potential” for the 2024 WSL Finals to run on the first day of the competition window, September 6. According to a release from the league, contest officials will wake up Friday morning and check conditions with an expectation of running the event. That final decision will be made by 7:30 a.m. PST for an 8 a.m. start.
“It looks like tomorrow is going to be really good for us and Surfline has even just upgraded its prediction for the size,” said Jessi Miley-Dyer, WSL Commissioner. “We’re down here today for the training, and the energy is amazing already. The surfers are looking more ready than ever, and everyone’s super excited about what really looks like an 8:00 a.m. start tomorrow morning.”
For anybody who had been watching forecasts throughout the week, Friday morning has always looked like the best opportunity for waves during the contest window. Lowers isn’t ground zero for any major swell activity between September 6 and September 14 when the window shuts down. Before the announcement, Surfline forecasted three-to-four-foot waves there Friday and Saturday with the next week dropping off in size. The forecasting outlet added about a foot to its outlook for Friday’s waves leading up to the WSL’s announcement.
World number two Griffin Colapinto was a little more ambitious with his prediction earlier in the week.
“I’d say like head high, a foot overhead on the bombs,” he said Wednesday. “Probably pretty consistent. Like 14-second intervals, so that’s good. And then I think it’s kind of windy midday to afternoon, so probably some good opportunities for airs on the lefts.”
This will be the fourth time the WSL Finals have run at Trestles since the event’s inception in 2021. In June, the league announced the event will be moved to Cloudbreak for the 2025 edition.
