Every year the WSL brings big wave surfing royalty together under one roof for the annual Big Wave Awards. Needless to say, it’s an awesome celebration. And the things people accomplish in order to get recognized on such a stage is the really remarkable part. The biggest waves ridden in the previous year, the craziest waves paddled into, the gnarliest barrels, and the people who most pushed the limits of what’s possible in big wave surfing are all awarded as much as $75,000 for top honors.
On Tuesday, the WSL announced its nominees for the 2017 event. Ben Andrews, Jamie Mitchell, and Francisco Porcella all received two nods between the Ride of the Year, Paddle, and Biggest Wave awards, which also landed Porcella and Mitchell in the Best Overall Performance category for their third nominations. No women were nominated for the open categories of Biggest Wave, Ride of the Year, and Paddle this year (Keala Kennelly won the Pure Scott Barrel of the Year Award), but Paige Alms, Justine Dupont, Keala Kennelly, Nicole Pacelli, and Bianca Valenti were all nominated for the Women’s Best Performance Award.
The full list of nominees for each category can be found on the WSL’s Big Wave Awards website, with the winners being announced at the annual awards ceremony on Saturday, April 29th in Huntington Beach.
