The Inertia

At this point, we might as well dedicate an entire series to people getting dropped in on at the Superbank. In case you missed it, we’ve seen footage of some heavy-ish localism from that stretch of sand – as well as Occy feeling the burn. And Raw Surfing dropped clip of some Superbank action that features even more jockeying on the Gold Coast.

The first wave in particular is a beautifully choreographed ballet of disrespect. It starts off with a surfer popping up directly in front of a man already screaming down the face, forcing him to suddenly hit the brakes. Though the original dropper makes a casual retreat over the shoulder, a new challenger emerges closer to the curl. He pulls ahead and whips a turn, causing the original rider to stare straight ahead, perform a few half-hearted Huntington hops, then just give up and retreat.

The hardships witnessed in the video hardly end there, but the scene perfectly demonstrates the highs and lows of surfing the Superbank. Sure, you may get to take off on the wave of your life, but you won’t be alone for long.

For now, the drop-ins will continue until morale improves.
