A few days before the video you see above was shot, Titouan Galea was in Tahiti. He was there for the same massive swell that everyone else was there for, as you’d expect. And he scored big time. As that same swell made its way across the ocean, Galea hopped on a flight and chased it to Maui, where he grabbed his wing, strapped into a foil board, and went wing surfing.
“I flew from Tahiti two days after I scored a huge swell,” he explained. “It takes about five days for a swell like that to hit the shores of the Hawaiian Islands. I knew the timing would be good. The question was which spot to go to and if the wind would be there.”
Maui is generally a windy place, but if you know how these things work, you’ll be able to figure out how to use the wind to your advantage. With a big south in the water and solid trade winds, Galea picked La Perouse Bay and crossed his fingers.
“In the beginning the wind was not so strong, we were not sure it was rideable,” he remembered. “But after waiting a bit, the wind came a bit stronger. We went out and caught as many waves as we could. The conditions were really nice, with side offshore wind and some good sets over five feet. I was accompanied by F-One’s Christian Barcellos. The atmosphere was quite special, we were riding surrounded by this lava landscape. Falling was not allowed!”
