When I got word of some “off season” south forecasted to hit Nicaragua I called two friends with the idea of making a quick escape from Los Angeles. Morgan Sliff is on a mission to surf 365 consecutive days and instantly said yes. Chris “Thes One” Portugal of the rap group People Under the Stairs checked his tour dates and had some free time to make the escape as well. So the three of us booked our flights and it wasn’t long before our friend Cruz from Adventure Sports Tours was picking us up at the airport and driving us out to the La Barra Surf Camp. The next four days were spent surfing non stop 2-4 ft waves in tropical waters with the occasional break for a Tona beer. While some breaks were just a short walk from the surf camp others required drives down dusty roads while avoiding cattle and napping dogs. Other more remote breaks with not a footprint in site along open miles of beach were only accessible by boat. Morgan was in heaven catching wave after wave on her longboard while Chris spent a lot of time pulling into perfect barrels one wave after another. Everyone had a permanent smile on their face for the four days. Nicaragua is truly a surfers paradise.
