Sometimes Mother Nature just doesn’t show up to the party. That’s part of the greatness of surfing: in the end, we’re all subject to her whims. But just because she’s not feeling like producing bigger waves doesn’t mean she’s not fun to hang out with.
Sometimes I need to take a break from chasing big waves. My friends and I took a few boats out past the crowds on a flat day in my hometown of Santa Cruz to get to know ol’ Ma Nature on one of her quieter days.
