The long term goal is direct, ambitious, and outright amazing: To create a regional conscious, in the Mediterranean and beyond, of an open and more tolerant youth, who will eventually vote for peaceful political leaders. And just how the Surfing 4 Peace summit plans to accomplish that is something we are just as quick to get behind. The short term goal, or action is to show that with a common passion (surfing), people from very different cultures and backgrounds are able to exchange, share and create friendships.
While most of the surfing world will be focused on Europe for the Quik Pro France in the coming weeks, a group of 15 surfers from 7 countries including Israel, Afghanistan and Gaza will gather there to surf in pursuit of that amazing longterm goal. Quite often surfers proclaim surfing shouldn’t leave the ocean. Surf publications should stick to surfing, where there’s no room for politics, religion, or any combination of social issues. But can anyone argue using the common passion and love for the ocean is one hell of a way to bring people together, some from war torn regions nonetheless, in the name of peace?
