Usually, when you see people stepping off Jet Skis, it’s at an unruly beach break where they want to avoid paddling out through the mayhem. Or at a bigger spot where speed is your best friend. But have you ever seen a Canadian step off? The type that happens out of a canoe? Because that’s the best type.
Gerard Blaauw sent me this video of the perfectly executed Canadian step off. “I’m actually the one piloting the canoe,” he told me. “My now five-year-old daughter in front of me (four at the time, I believe) and my friend Dave Crichton is the one making the leap. It’s a little wave called Baby Face on the Ottawa river. Not too easy to paddle into due to the amount of aerated water on the approach, so we improvised a little.”
Surf on the Ottawa can get pretty wild and sometimes the crew in eastern Canada utilizes Jet Skis to pull themselves into massive surf on the river. But stepping off a canoe into a sweet little left-hander is so Canadian. And so freakin’ cool.
