FCS or Futures? A new clip from Wild Cat Surf Charters may have some ammunition for the Futures camp.

In the (extremely short) clip, credited to videographer David Biner of Indo Eye, a surfer goes in for a frontside carve on a wave that is presumably in the Mentawais, based on the account posting it and the comments. In the background, a lonely FCS fin can be seen flying off over the horizon.

“Is this the best Futures Fins advert ever?” reads the description of the video. While the FCS system has the undeniable benefit of easy swap-ability, that convenience does come at a cost. You might just see one of your fins go sailing off into the distance, presumably to make a new life for itself, free of the pressure of having to fit into a thruster set.

On the other hand, maybe this is a new frontier for on-the-fly fin reconfiguration. Can’t choose between the turning power of thrusters and the skatey feeling of a twin? How about both?

Unfortunately, based on a comment from Black Pearl Surf Photography, the free-range fin didn’t simply come out of the FCS slot, but rather took the fin plugs with it, which would make the conversion back to thruster a bit of a project. On the other hand, making a snap so hard that it literally tears your board apart has to be one of the more satisfying flexes in surfing.
