If you haven’t figured it out by now, one can ride open-ocean swell for long distances on a variety of craft. The waves don’t even have to break. Like Kai Lenny did a couple weeks ago for his “Downwind Challenge” to promote an island-wide beach cleanup and raise awareness about the tiny microplastics that are ruining the oceans. It was kind of a stunt, but the six-man open canoe team sponsored by Red Bull (Team Wa’a) tried to pull him into a bump. We’re not sure if they got him into more than one–we hear speed was an issue–but they did get him started.
He crossed a number of channels in the islands with foil, kite, SUP, shortboard, a cardboard box (kidding on that last one, obviously, but he probably could). “When we decided to do the first-ever statewide beach cleanup through the Hawaiian Islands, we had no idea it would have this much of an impact! Mahalo to everyone who helped us bring this to life,” he said on social media.
