Monks and surfing. Surfing monks. These are about the two coolest things you could ever combine. And that’s part of what these Gyuto monks are up to in Bondi these days.
Best known for their chordal chants, Gyuto monks have traveled around the world doing rad stuff for a long time, like performing with the Grateful Dead and being nominated for a Grammy award. Currently, they’re on an annual retreat to Australia as part of a photo exhibition called “Mindful Practice – Gyuto Monks Summer Retreat.”
They call Bondi their “spiritual home in Sydney,” as they’ve been coming here every year since 2008. And apparently they’re a hoot with their hosts, telling stories about other surfers and beach goers who come out of the water during the monk’s workshops to meditate with them right there on the beach. It’s probably quite the sight to see – almost as cool as watching them surf.
