When one gets as good at surfing as John John Florence, tiny little tweaks in a surfboard are far more noticeable. For the average Joe, a little tune up might not be all that apparent, but for John? It might mean the difference between another world title and… well, not another world title.
So it makes sense then that he would do pretty extensive board testing. It’s also, of course, very fun to try new things; to shake a bit of variety into that big ol’ bowl of life. But most things aren’t quite as fun without friends and family, so John was joined by his brothers Nathan and Ivan Florence, and his pals Eli Olson, Ian Walsh, and Luke Swanson.
“It was a fun weekend of surf, testing some new design ideas with Pyzel,” John John wrote. “I like the challenge of figuring out a new board, and then figuring out if it can progress the way I want to surf in different waves. Sometimes we end up keeping the original design, but the process of going back and forth always give us new ideas we hadn’t thought of.”
It’s interesting to hear the way John John and Pyzel talk about the shapes. It’s just two people with the deepest wells of surfboard knowledge bouncing ideas off each other in hopes of creating something better.
