The Inertia

The Wedge has been open for business since the end of April. We previously saw a highlight reel of the type of wipeouts that only the SoCal behemoth can produce, and Jamie O’Brien has already been there a few times this year, but on May 17, things really kicked up a notch.

By all accounts, it was wild. As Brent Weldon describes on his YouTube Channel, “The Wedge got SLAMMED by this swell. Got up at 4 a.m., got to the beach and waited for enough light to start filming. Some giant waves rolled through. About 9 a.m., the wind got on it but (the waves were) INSANE while it lasted.”

There’s nothing like the excitement tinged with fear of watching that wave rise up underneath a surfer or bodyboarder like the jaws of a leviathan. The regulars at The Wedge have it dialed, but as the first wipeout in the video can attest, sometimes the monster has to eat.
