The Inertia

It’s been almost two weeks since wildfires began to level wide swathes of Los Angeles. Though the Palisades and Eaton fires are still active, fire containment has recently improved and many residents have been allowed to return to affected neighborhoods. The ordeal appears far from over, but we’ve made progress.

A new post from Southern California mainstay Beefs T.V. flashes back to the eve of the fires, as “life-threatening” winds up to 100 mph began to rip through the region. In it, surfers are seen trying to brave the winds to catch a ride in Huntington Beach. Little did they know that many Southern California surfers would soon be banished from the water, due to runoff from fire debris.

“Surfers attempt to surf in 80mph Gale Force winds at Huntington Beach during the strongest wind event in Southern California history,” wrote Beefs in the caption. “A day later these winds brought tragic fire conditions to Southern California and our thoughts are with the communities affected by the devastating Los Angeles fires.”
