It’s been wild week of surf for California and Hawaii. True to form, YouTuber Nathan Florence was there to take advantage, camera in hand. “We’re in Maui. Looking like Jaws tomorrow morning, maybe Mavs after.” he said from the airport. “If not that, then maybe back to Oahu…We’re on one-ways, we don’t know where the wind will take us.”
What followed was a sketchy jeep ride to the famous blue barrels of Pe’ahi. The video features a quick montage of gut-wrenching drops, cavernous barrels and at least one four-person party wave. However, none of that footage actually featured Nathan, who found himself on the wrong end of basically every wave he encountered. The banner moment happens around the 10:05 mark, where Florence is caught on the inside, literally between the rocks and a hard place.
“Zero waves ridden, five hours.” said Nathan on the ride back “Got cleaned up multiple times. Just one of those days, nothing you can do about it.” Even if you’re a Florence, sometimes it’s just not your day.
