The Inertia

During the opening heat of 2014’s Mavericks Invitational, Mark Healey suffered one of the heaviest two wave take downs imaginable. What a way to kick off the event. First heat of day. Swell is pumping. And then Healey disappears into the depths, his board vertical on the surface like a tombstone marking a watery grave. But as one of the gnarliest guys in the game, Healey took the beating like a champ and even let out a triumphant holler afterwards.

Point-of-view footage from the take down has been floating around for a while. But Healey just released an unedited version, which shows the sheer horror of the incident in its entirety. The camera goes black for a while, proving just how deep Healey was. And when it’s all said and done, after two waves prevent him from securing a breath, Healey was under for just less than a minute. That’s not very long, when you think about it, especially for a guy who can hold his breath for three minutes and 30 seconds.
