The US Open comes with preconceptions. Riots, teeny boppers, body paint, chaos. Just a few things that might go through your mind when a friend tells you they’re headed to the sands of Huntington Beach during the event period.
For a surfing event, there are certainly a lot of distractions. But when it comes down to it, everything else is ancillary. The surfing is precisely why everything else exists.
For the women, it’s another stop on the women’s world championship tour. The best of the best are there trying to solidify their world title ambitions. For the men, it’s a chance to earn points in hopes of qualifying for the big show, solidify your spot on the world tour for next year if you’re already there, or win a big contest if you’re kind of an unknown.
It’s kind of a big deal. And at the end of the day, the US Open is about surfing. So be sure to check out the live stream here if you’re not local or too squeamish to head to the beach yourself.
