The Inertia

Kai Lenny’s latest vlog post starts off with him on the back of a boat, shivering in the frigid Bay Area air. “We’re out here, Golden Gate Bridge in the background, [with a] hydrofoil,” he shouts to the camera. “I’m gonna get towed in behind a giant tanker, surfing the wake. It’s gonna be pretty insane. Hope I don’t get run over or eaten by a shark.”

Kai was joined by fellow vlogger Jamie O’Brien for the expedition. While tanker waves are the bread and butter for novelty wave enthusiasts like JOB and Ben Gravy, this was Lenny’s first time riding one. Luckily, Kai has made it his business to be familiar with all manner of alternative wave-riding techniques. When you’ve done everything from pulling off a backflip at jaws to getting towed by a horse, getting whipped into a freezing cold bow wave is light work.

It turned out that the biggest concern that arose was a the question of whether they were allowed to be doing any of this in the first place. “I don’t know if this is legal or not, but we’re gonna give it a try,” Kai wondered aloud in the water. “It’s almost like we’re pirates, stealing the wake.”
